The city that photographs itself: a pastel hillside, a lit bridge over the sea, temples on the rocks and pastel capsules by the water. Eight spots worth the memory card, with honest tips.

• Gamcheon Culture Village

  Saha-gu

  A hillside of pastel houses stacked in tumbling rows, threaded with murals and stair-alleys. The postcard shot looks out over the rooftops from the village's viewpoints.

  Tip People live here. Keep your voice down, do not block doorways, and stick to the marked paths.

• Gwangan Bridge from Gwangalli Beach

  Suyeong-gu

  The long suspension bridge strung with lights across the bay, framed by the beach and the cafe skyline behind you. Busan's signature night shot.

  Tip Go after dark for the lights. A phone night mode handles the long exposure from the sand; a small tripod helps.

• Huinnyeoul Culture Village

  Yeongdo

  White-walled houses perched on a cliff, with a narrow path running between them and the open sea. Every gap between the buildings frames the water.

  Tip A working residential lane on a cliff edge. Watch your footing and mind the homes and laundry lines.

  Gijang

  A rare seaside temple built onto the rocks above the water, its pavilions and pagoda set against the waves. Best in early light before the crowds.

  Tip Free to enter; go at opening for room to shoot. It gets very busy on weekends and holidays.

• Haeundae Blueline sky capsule & beach train

  Haeundae

  Pastel capsules and an open-sided train gliding along the old coastal rail line between Mipo, Cheongsapo and Songjeong, with the sea the whole way.

  Tip The capsules are pastel and photogenic from the ground too; you do not have to ride to get the shot.

• Marine City at night

  Haeundae

  The cluster of tall towers on the waterfront, mirrored in the water at night. The classic reflection is shot from across the inlet near the Gwangalli side.

  Tip A clear, still evening gives the cleanest reflection. Long-exposure or night mode smooths the water.

• Taejongdae sea cliffs

  Yeongdo

  A forested cape ringed by dramatic sea cliffs, a lighthouse and pine-lined trails looking out over the open water at the southern tip of the city.

  Tip The grounds and trails are free; only the Danubi loop train charges. Go for the cliff-edge lighthouse view.

• Cheongsapo

  Haeundae

  A small fishing village on the coast with a pair of red-and-white lighthouses and a glass-floored observatory reaching out over the water.

  Tip Pair it with the beach train, which stops nearby. The rocks are slippery when wet.
