The reason many people come. Busan strings a run of beaches along its coast, from the high-rise buzz of Haeundae to a quiet stretch in Gijang. Six worth the sand, and which one fits your day.

• Haeundae Beach 해운대

  Haeundae · Line 2

  Busan's signature beach: a wide arc of sand backed by high-rise hotels, with the SEA LIFE aquarium at one end and the Blueline Park beach train running round the headland. The busiest, most developed beach in the city.

  Tip The default first-night base. Busiest in July and August, so come early for room on the sand.

• Gwangalli Beach 광안리

  Suyeong-gu · Line 2 Gwangan

  A calmer beach than Haeundae, framed by the lit Gwangan Bridge across the bay. The strip behind the sand is dense with cafes and bars, and the bridge runs a light show after dark.

  Tip The best sunset-to-night spot in the city. Some weekend evenings bring a drone or fireworks show over the bay.

• Songjeong Beach 송정

  Haeundae-gu · northeast coast

  A gentler, more laid-back beach just up the coast from Haeundae, and Busan's main spot for beginner surfing, with board rentals and schools along the sand. The Blueline beach train runs out to it.

  Tip Quieter than Haeundae and good for a first surf lesson. Reachable on the Blueline train from Mipo.

• Dadaepo Beach 다대포

  Saha-gu · Line 1 Dadaepo Beach

  A wide, shallow beach at the mouth of the Nakdong River on the city's western edge, known for warm shallow water, broad tidal flats and a famous sunset. The Sunset Fountain of Dreams, a large musical floor fountain, runs on summer evenings.

  Tip Shallow and calm, good for families. Check the fountain's summer schedule before an evening trip.

• Songdo Beach 송도

  Seo-gu · west of Nampo

  One of the country's oldest public beaches, in a sheltered cove west of Nampo. Two headline add-ons: the Songdo Cloud Trails, a curving seaside skywalk over the water, and the Songdo Bay cable car across the cove.

  Tip Pair the beach with the skywalk and cable car, and combine it with a Nampo market day.

• Ilgwang Beach 일광

  Gijang-gun · up the coast

  A quiet beach up the coast in Gijang, past Songjeong, with a long sandy stretch and far fewer crowds. A calm alternative for when Haeundae and Gwangalli are packed.

  Tip The low-key choice for a slow beach day. Fewer facilities than the big beaches, so plan ahead.

Beach notes

• The beaches are free and open to walk year-round. The official swimming season, with lifeguards and full facilities, runs roughly July to August.
• Haeundae and Gwangalli are the liveliest; Songjeong is for surf; Dadaepo and Ilgwang are the calmer, family-friendly picks.
• Evenings are a draw even out of season: Gwangalli's bridge lights, Dadaepo's fountain, Haeundae's promenade.
• Summer weekends are extremely crowded. Water shoes help on the rockier edges, and shade goes fast, so arrive early.
